THIRTEEN

They picked up the kids mid-morning on Saturday. In addition to his backpack, Daniel also had his gym bag, his baseball bat and mitt.

“I’ve got practice at three,” he said.

“On a Saturday?” Sam asked. Daniel just shrugged.

“Hey, cool,” Lacey said. “Can we watch?”

Daniel looked aghast, and Lacey thought sure he’d object to having family hang around, but he thought about it a moment, then finally shrugged again.

“I guess,” he said reluctantly.

Lacey hid a grin as she hugged Kenzie. “What do you think, kiddo?” she asked. “Might be some cute boys there.”

Kenzie and Daniel both rolled their eyes.

Back at the apartment, Daniel took his gear to his room and closed the door. He hadn’t seemed particularly moody, but now Lacey wondered if he planned to brood in his room until lunch time. Kenzie, chatterbox that she was, had already asked Lacey to read over her report on the twelfth amendment.

“Mom helped me write it,” she said. “But she said you and Dad should read it.”

“Sure,” Lacey said. “We’ll be glad to read it.”

“You two go ahead,” Sam said. He grabbed two sports drinks out of the fridge and headed toward Daniel’s room. “I’ll read it later.”

So it begins, Lacey thought. She would have loved to be a fly on the wall in that room, but Sam would give her a rundown of the conversation later.

“Okay,” she said to Kenzie. “Let’s see this report.”

The report surprised her. It was five pages long and well plotted out. She remembered from the weekend before that Kenzie’d been tasked with describing the amendment at its inception, then detailing the ways its interpretation had changed over time. Finally she had to discuss how present-day politics might be affected by the two applications of the amendment. It seemed like quite a task for the girl; Lacey couldn’t remember doing such things when she was twelve, but figured getting kids to think about government at a young age was a good thing. Too many teens were clueless about politics and often didn’t bother to vote when they came of age. To Lacey’s mind, getting them familiar with the constitution at an early age was a good thing.

“This is really good,” she told Kenzie after she read the full report. “You did a great job.”

“Really?” Kenzie beamed.

“Yes. You do a really good job of explaining the amendment and its evolution. I learned a couple of things, that’s for sure.” She laid her hand on Kenzie’s dark hair and smiled encouragement. “Now, the bad news,” she continued.

Kenzie’s smile drooped.

“Don’t worry. I just have a couple of suggestions.” She paged through the report and circled a few words with a pencil. Then she tapped the first circle. “Here, you say the amendment says, present tense. You’ve studied tenses, right? Present tense, past tense, future tense?”

Kenzie nodded.

“Okay, good. So here you have says, present tense, but here”—Lacey tapped the second circle—“you have said, past tense. Down here, you have says again. It’s not a big deal, but you’re jumping back and forth between the present and the past.
